Here's a photo of me at the office.I am a professor of philosophy at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan (since 2003), and a fellow in the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, UK (since 2008).
I wrote Compassionate Eating as Care of Creation (2008; 2010) and co-edited Philosophy Comes to Dinner: Arguments about the Ethics of Eating (with Andrew Chignell and Terence Cuneo) (2016). You can browse many of my other academic articles, book chapters, and online writings here or at Philpapers.org. I'm excitedly anticipating the release of my first trade book, Hungry Beautiful Animals: The Joyful Case for Going Vegan, which Basic Books will publish in November 2024. I teach and write on twentieth-century European philosophy (especially hermeneutics and philosophy as a way of life) and applied ethics (especially animal and food ethics). You can check out the Student Handbooks for some of the courses I teach here. To support and extend vibrant teaching, scholarship, and public education in animal and food ethics, I founded and convene the Animals and the Kingdom of God Lecture Series at Calvin College (since 2008) and co-founded and convened the Wake Up Weekend festival (2006-2014). I'm also a member of the Philosophy as a Way of Life Network at the University of Notre Dame; a U.S. Observer of the Christian Ethics of Farm Animal Welfare Project at the University of Aberdeen, UK; a member of the board of directors for The Better Food Foundation and CreatureKind; and a member of the board of advisors for Sarx. Life pursuits include practicing the disciplines of partnership, parenting, friendship, teaching and learning philosophy as a way of life, advocacy for fellow creatures (human and otherwise), Twin Peaks super-fandom, feverish support of The Arsenal Football Club (despite the secondary Bundesliga allegiances on display in this photo), and eating vegan desserts like they are going out of style (even though they are just now coming into style). Many thanks for looking things over and do let me know if you have any questions! |
